Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

What is an Extended Project Qualification?

The EPQ allows students to extend their abilities beyond the A level syllabus and prepare for both university and their future careers. It is worth half an A level (28 UCAS points) so can be used to earn extra UCAS points.

The EPQ is a qualification designed to extend and develop your skills in independent research and project management.

Why do an EPQ?

  • Demonstrate to university admissions tutors you have independent study skills, and the requisite motivation and character to successfully complete a degree programme at the highest level.
  • Develop self-reliance and invaluable research skills.
  • Earn additional UCAS Tariff Points.
  • Top universities regard the EPQ very highly and consider that the qualities it develops are essential for the successful completion of their university education and for life.

What do I have to do for an EPQ?

  • Choose a topic that you are passionately interested in.
  • Undertake a research assignment – normally this is done over the summer holidays between Y1 and Y2 of our A Level Programme.
  • Complete your research and write up a report ( 5,000 words) or create and manufacture a product with a 1000 word summary to support it.
  • Be interviewed about your report or summary and give a short presentation on it.

How is the EPQ marked?

  • Assessment takes place throughout the process, as well as on the final report or product.
  • Marks are given for your project planning, time management, research, development of argument, evaluation and presentation.
  • The UCAS points you earn on your EPQ will depend on what grade you achieve.

How long does it take to complete an EPQ?

You should allow about 120 hours.

What support will I receive?

Examining Boards have strict rules governing time and nature of input that teachers can provide. At NMSC, you will be supervised by teachers who are leaders in their field of STEM education.
