FAQ – Cryptography & Computing Summer School
Code, Create and Conquer: The Science of Cryptography and Computing
What is this course about?
This one-week summer course introduces students to coding, cryptography, problem-solving, and computing concepts through hands-on activities. Students explore how codes work, learn the basics of programming, and apply their skills in creative group projects.
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is designed for students aged 14–17 who enjoy logic, puzzles, or technology, are curious about coding and computing, and may be considering Computer Science, Engineering, or related subjects. No advanced coding experience is required and students are supported at different ability levels.
What will my child learn?
Students will explore classical and modern cryptography, develop basic coding skills, learn how computers solve problems, design and build a digital or robotic project, and work collaboratively in teams. The course focuses on thinking skills, creativity, and confidence, not just technical knowledge.
Is the course safe and supervised?
Yes. All sessions are fully supervised by experienced teachers, carefully structured and age-appropriate, and delivered in a safe learning environment. All excursions such as Bletchley Park or the National Museum of Computing are fully supervised and risk assessed.
Does my child need their own computer?
No. All necessary equipment and software are provided.
How is progress assessed?
Assessment is informal and supportive, based on participation in activities, engagement with problem-solving tasks, teamwork, and creativity. There are no exams.
Will my child receive a certificate?
Yes. Students receive a Certificate of Completion.
How does this help future study?
The course helps students develop logical and computational thinking, gain confidence with coding concepts, and explore whether computing is a subject they wish to pursue further.
FAQ – Practical Lab Skills: Behind the Test Tube
What is this course?
This is an intensive, hands-on chemistry laboratory course for students interested in chemistry, medicine, or engineering. Students carry out experiments including synthesis, purification, titration, and spectroscopy in a supervised laboratory environment.
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for students who are typically 15–17 years old, have a strong GCSE Chemistry background, are motivated and able to follow instructions carefully, and are considering A-level Chemistry or university-level science.
Is the laboratory work safe?
Yes. Safety is a priority. All work is supervised, students receive a safety induction, experiments are risk assessed, eye protection is worn at all times, and clear procedures are in place for incidents.
What will my child learn?
Students develop confidence in laboratory work, precision in techniques, understanding of analytical methods, and scientific reasoning and problem-solving.
How is progress assessed?
Assessment is based on lab technique, accuracy, analysis and evaluation, and professionalism. There are no formal exams.
Will my child receive a certificate?
Yes. Students receive a Certificate of Completion recognising advanced practical training.
How does this help with future study?
It helps students prepare for A-levels and university-level chemistry and strengthens academic applications.
