FAQ – Medicine Summer School
What is this course about?
This one-week summer programme is designed for students aged 15–17 who are interested in pursuing a future career in medicine or healthcare. The course provides a realistic introduction to medical study, combining academic learning, practical skills, and guidance on medical school applications.
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for students who are considering medicine, dentistry, or healthcare careers, enjoy science and are academically motivated, want to understand what studying medicine involves, or are preparing for future UCAT tests and interviews.
The programme is exploratory and supportive — it does not require prior medical knowledge.
Is this course suitable if my child has not studied in the UK before?
Yes. The course is designed to be clear and structured, supportive for international students, and accessible without prior knowledge of the UK medical system. All explanations are given in clear, supportive English, and students are encouraged to ask questions.
What will my child learn?
Students will explore human anatomy and physiology, take part in supervised clinical skills workshops such as suturing practice, receive certified First Aid training, practise UCAT-style questions, prepare for medical interviews, develop personal statements, and discuss medical ethics and professional responsibilities. The course emphasises communication, reflection, and ethical awareness as well as academic knowledge.
Is the clinical content appropriate for this age group?
Yes. All clinical activities are carefully selected for students aged 15–17, taught using simulation equipment rather than patients, and focused on skills, communication, and professionalism. There is no exposure to hospitals, patients, or invasive procedures.
Is the course safe?
Yes. Safety and wellbeing are a priority. All practical sessions are fully supervised, students receive a safety briefing before practical work, First Aid training is delivered by qualified instructors, all activities are age-appropriate and carefully risk assessed, and sensitive topics are handled professionally and with care.
Who teaches the course?
The programme is delivered by experienced teachers and professionals with backgrounds in medicine and healthcare education, UCAT and interview preparation, and academic mentoring and safeguarding. Students are supported throughout the week.
Will my child receive qualifications or certificates?
Yes. Students who complete the course receive a Course Completion Certificate and recognised First Aid certification. These certificates can support future applications and academic portfolios.
Does this guarantee medical school entry?
No. This course does not guarantee entry to medical school. However, it helps students understand what medical study involves, decide whether medicine is the right path, and prepare effectively for future applications.
What language level is required?
Students should have a good working level of English to participate fully.
How is progress assessed?
There are no formal exams. Progress is assessed through participation and engagement, communication and reflection, practical skills practice, and a multiple choice test for the First Aid Qualification. Feedback is formative and supportive.
What support is available for students?
Students are supported through structured sessions, approachable staff, and clear guidance and expectations. Questions and concerns are encouraged and addressed promptly.
