What will students study?

The 2 Year GCSE Programme is a carefully constructed curriculum. Where every student follows the same academic pathway, rather than choosing a broad set of options.

Where STEM meets language, culture, creativity and society 

A NatMatSci education is about more than examination preparation. Scientists, mathematicians, engineers and technologists need to communicate clearly, think ethically, understand society and see the creative power of their subjects. 

That is why students on the 2 Year GCSE Programme will take part in our bespoke Intersections Programme: a distinctive two-hour weekly course exploring the places where STEM intersects with language, history, culture, and creativity. 

More than lessons 

Students join the wider NatMatSci community from the moment they arrive. They take part in tutor time, societies, sport and the wider life of the College. 

For boarding students, NatMatSci offers the opportunity to live and study within our specialist academic environment, developing independence while being supported by staff who know them well. 

 

Preparing for A-level success 

The 2 Year GCSE Programme is designed as the ideal preparation for NatMatSci’s specialist A-level pathway. 

Students who progress into the A-level programme will already understand the College’s approach, teaching style and academic culture. They will have developed the mathematical fluency, scientific knowledge, study habits and confidence needed to move quickly into even more advanced work. 

Progression to the A-level programme is expected to be based on strong GCSE performance, including top grades in the subjects the student wishes to continue.

Most GCSE programmes ask students to keep their options broad. Our 2 Year GCSE Programme is intentionally different. 

It is designed for students who already know that they love mathematics and science, and who want to study in an environment where those interests are taken seriously. Students follow a carefully designed academic programme, built around the primacy of Mathematics and Science. 

This gives students a powerful foundation for A-level study and, in particular, for future pathways in STEM, Engineering, Medicine, Computer Science and related disciplines.

The right GCSE programme can build the depth, fluency and confidence that allow a student to move into advanced study with real momentum. Our programme gives students more time in the subjects that matter most for future STEM success: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science. English remains central, particularly for students who need to develop the academic communication skills required for future study in the UK.

Frequently asked questions 

Is this a general GCSE programme? 

No. This is a specialist GCSE pathway for students who are already strongly interested in STEM. It is deliberately focused, with a common defined curriculum built around mathematics, science, computer science and English. 

Why does the programme include so much Mathematics? 

Mathematics underpins future success in science, engineering, computer science, economics and many other STEM-related fields. The programme gives students significant time in Mathematics and is designed to include all of the content for the Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Statistics IGCSEs. 

Does the programme include humanities or creative subjects? 

Rather than offering a conventional menu of GCSE options, the programme includes the NatMatSci Intersections Programme. This explores the connections between STEM and language, culture, society, ethics and creativity through topics such as the history of mathematics and science, the science of music, AI and consciousness, climate change and science in culture and media. 

Is this suitable for future medics? 

Yes. Students interested in medical careers will have access to our specialist Medical Pathway Programme across their GCSE years, helping them explore medical careers, understand what future applications involve, and begin developing the knowledge, experiences and confidence they will need for this highly competitive route. 

What class sizes should students expect? 

GCSE teaching groups are intentionally small, to enable us to provide more individual support, with a maximum class size of 16. 

Do students progress to NatMatSci’s A-level programme? 

Yes. The programme is designed to prepare students for progression to NatMatSci’s A-level pathway. Progression would be based on strong GCSE performance, including top grades in the subjects the student wishes to continue.
