NatMatSci student Maria has co-authoreda new research paper exploring how multiple robots can work together to search for and locate objects.
Titled “Going in Circles: Collaborative Multi-Robot Treasure Hunting”, The research investigates a scenario involving multiple autonomous machines searching for an unknown number of treasures hidden around a circle. Each can move independently and instantly share information when a treasure is discovered.
The team explores how the machines can work together as efficiently as possible, aiming to minimise the total time needed for every treasure to be visited.
To establish the limits of the problem, the researchers first consider how a single machine could tackle the challenge if the locations of all the treasures were already known. The results from this simpler problem then help to understand the wider multi-agent search challenge.
Bringing together computer science, algorithms, mathematics and robotics, the research demonstrates how mathematical problems can be used to explore challenges in autonomous systems.
