We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding success of two of our students in this year’s Mother Tongue Other Tongue poetry competition, with Jean named the Key Stage 5 winner and Bella receiving a Highly Commended award for their Korean-language poetry.
Jean was named the Key Stage 5 Mother Tongue winner for her poem The Island Baby. Her winning entry impressed the judging panel at the University of Warwick with the quality and maturity of her language, as well as her moving reflections on change, loneliness and the power of nature.
The judges described the judging process as “careful and very difficult” due to the high quality of the entries, making Jean’s achievement particularly impressive. Her winning poem will be on display at Coventry Library throughout the summer, giving members of the public an opportunity to read and enjoy her work.
We are also delighted that Bella received a Highly Commended award for her Korean poem Until Peonies Bloom. The judges praised Bella’s thoughtful exploration of how the meaning and interpretation of a poem can change over time, reflecting the impact of experience and growing maturity. They described her work as “very eloquently conveyed.”
The competition, organised by the University of Warwick’s School of Modern Languages and Cultures, celebrates multilingual creativity and encourages young people to explore the languages and cultures that are meaningful to them.
Congratulations to Jean and Bella on these fantastic achievements. We are incredibly proud here at NatMatSci of their creativity, linguistic skill and willingness to share their voices through poetry.
