Students from MedSOC had the opportunity to attend a fascinating guest talk delivered by Anna Gao, a Consultant Ophthalmologist.
During the session, Miss Gao spoke about her career pathway into ophthalmology, sharing insights into the journey from medical school through specialist training to becoming a consultant. Her talk provided students with a valuable look at the dedication, curiosity, and resilience required to pursue a career in medicine.
Students were particularly interested in the recent surgical cases Miss Gao discussed. She shared examples from procedures she has performed, offering a glimpse into the precision and innovation involved in modern ophthalmic surgery as a consultant.
One of the highlights of the session was the opportunity for students to handle real surgical instruments used in ophthalmology. Miss Gao brought a selection of tools she uses in theatre, allowing students to see them up close and get a sense of how delicate and specialised they are. This hands-on experience helped bring the reality of surgical practice to life.
Events like this are an important part of the learning experience at National Mathematics and Science College, giving students the chance to meet professionals working at the forefront of their fields and to explore possible future career paths.
The visit was particularly fitting as we celebrate International Women’s Day, highlighting inspiring women working in STEM and medicine who are helping to shape the future and motivate the next generation.
